20 out of 50 FET Colleges under

Since 2011, 20 of the 50 Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges, and since 2010, 8 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) have been under administration, a reply to a DA parliamentary question has revealed. The number of FET Colleges under administration rose sharply from 3 in 2011-2012 to 9 from April-August 2013.

I will be writing the to the Chairperson of the Higher Education and Training Portfolio Committee, Mr Motswane Malale, requesting that the Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, be summoned to Parliament to explain what plans are in place to ensure that these institutions are better managed.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) continues to tout FETs and SETAs as being the answer to South Africa's lack of skilled artisans, but how can we produce quality graduates and successfully place them in the work environment when the institutions responsible for this are failing?

Earlier this year the DHET admitted that they failed to ensure that all FETs had formalised FET College Councils and also missed the deadline to hand over all certificates to FET students this year.

Clearly, the higher education institutions he is responsible for are not a priority for Minister Nzimande. He continues to disappoint students as a result.

South Africa is currently facing an unemployment crisis, and it is imperative that the institutions that students attend in order to equip themselves with the skills to enter the job market are properly managed and are top quality.
